BGSU artists draw on human figure as focus for Dada show

Painting by Truman Chambers

From DOWNTOWN BOWLING GREEN

A Bowling Green State University student-led art exhibition will be on display through May 19 at the Dada Gallery in downtown Bowling Green.

The exhibition, “We, Embodied,” addresses the place of the human figure in the contemporary art world and will feature the work of eight senior BFA students: Truman Chambers, Kyle Crawford, Trevor Goebel, Christin Kern, Dante Martinez, Kelli McKee, Leeann Ream and Kim Tumblin. Each artist explores the human figure as a visual theme in relation to issues such as transgender representation historically and currently, identity, “the gaze,” and other related topics that speak to today’s cultural climate. The show incorporates a wide variety of artistic media including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture – all materials with which the figure has been historically associated.

The exhibition presents the students’ work to a broader public in a manner that facilitates an ensuing dialogue with the surrounding community. In addition to the actual display of work, this group of emerging artists also took on the task of fully curating and planning the show. The hope is to promote the arts as a vehicle for increasing awareness of social issues that remain present in our culture.

The artwork will be on exhibit 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 19 in the gallery at 131 W. Wooster St.
