Children’s author Ana Crespo will celebrate the release of her book “Saudade: Our Longing for Brazil” with a visit to the Sofia Quintero Art & Cultural Center, 1222 Broadway St., Toledo, on Sunday, June 23 2:30 p.m.
The event is hosted by the center and Gathering Volumes bookstore along with Neal Porter Books/Holiday House.
“All are welcome to join us for Ms. Crespo’s visit,” says Denise Phillips, owner of Gathering Volumes. “We are thrilled to welcome Ana Crespo to Northwest Ohio and to learn about saudade, a Portuguese and Galician word with no perfect translation to English. We are also excited to have the opportunity to hear her speak at the Sofia Quintero Art & Cultural Center. It is such a beautiful location for her visit.”
“Saudade” tells the story of a little girl and her Brazilian immigrant mother hiking in the hills, and contemplating what makes them feel saudade, a strong, melancholy longing for something you once had. If your heart has ever ached remembering a place or a person, a smell or a taste, then you’ve felt saudade. An endnote offers author Ana Crespo’s personal story of saudade as a Brazilian immigrant, and a glossary covers other Portuguese words the mother and daughter use.
“Ms. Crespo just happens to be coming to town the week before the release of ‘Saudade,’ and we couldn’t be more pleased to be asked to help celebrate the release a few days early,” shared Phillips. “Ana Crespo spends her summers traveling around the United States, visiting National Parks, and exploring some of the most beautiful places in America, so we are hoping to hear about where she is visiting in the area.”
Originally from Brazil, Ana Crespo lives in the Rocky Mountain region with her husband and kids and is happiest when surrounded by nature.
