As part of the Edwin H. Simmons Creative Minds Series, violinist, songwriter and disability rights advocate Gaelynn Lea will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Donnell Theater of the Wolfe Center for the Arts on the BGSU campus. The free and open to the public performance will also include a lecture by Lea titled “Claiming Your Inner Freedom.”

The 2016 winner of NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest, Lea has captivated audiences around the world with her unique mix of original songs and traditional fiddle tunes. In addition to performing and recording, Lea frequently does speaking engagements about disability rights, finding inner freedom and accessibility in the arts. She uses her music as a platform to advocate for disabled people and to promote positive social change.

Lea composed the music for the most recent Broadway production of Macbeth, starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga. This iconic Shakespeare play was directed by Sam Gold and was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Sound Design.

Lea joined the Recording Academy with the class of 2021. She is also the co-founder and vice president of a change-making group called RAMPD – Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities. RAMPD’s mission is to amplify disability culture, promote inclusion and advocate for accessibility in the music industry.
