On Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 7 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater, Toledo Symphony League (TSL) Young Artist Competition winners Caroline Hannah (flute), Lauren Jin (piano), and Samuel Kim (cello) will perform alongside members of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) on a program featuring works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Anton Arensky, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Leoš Janáček. In-person tickets are now available to the general public by calling the TSO box office at 419.246.8000 or visiting toledosymphony.com.

“We have many talented, young musicians living in the area that is served by the Toledo Symphony,” says Rachel Schultz, Director of Education & Community Engagement for the TSO. “Fortunately, the Toledo Symphony League recognizes this and offers opportunities for these young musicians to thrive. To be featured with members of the TSO is an incredible honor and the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the art.”

The TSL hosts its annual, professionally judged Young Artist Competition to support and foster the development of talented young musicians in the community, providing up to three monetary awards each year. In addition to the award, winners are typically given the opportunity to perform as soloists with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Due to capacity limitations set forth by COVID-19 guidelines, this year’s winners have been given the opportunity to rehearse and perform as a member of a TSO small ensemble.

“Although this year’s winners are unable to perform with the full orchestra, they are still receiving a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and doing it safely” continues Schultz. “Thanks to the creative thinking of our Artistic Administrator Merwin Siu, who believes rehearsing and performing with professional musicians is one of the most formative musical experiences to have, we are able to continue this long-standing community tradition.”

Caroline Hannah is a 17-year-old junior at Perrysburg High School (PHS) who has studied the flute for four years. She is currently Principal Flautist in the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras’ Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the PHS Wind Ensemble and the PHS Symphony Orchestra. She will perform Mozart’s first Flute Quartet with the TSO.

Lauren Jin is a student at International Academy East who has studied the piano for nine years. She is a multi-recipient of the Monday Musicale scholarship and has performed at numerous recitals for the Ohio Music Teachers Association (OMEA). In addition to her piano studies, Lauren also plays the violin and has previously played in the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras and serves as the Principal Violinist in the Oakland Youth Orchestras’ Symphony Orchestra. She will perform the first movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Trio No. 2.

Samuel Kim is a senior at Sylvania Northview High School who has studied the cello for nine years. He has been part of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras for five years and has been the Principal Cellist in the Northview Orchestra for the past four years. Samuel will perform the first movement of Arensky’s String Quartet No. 2 with the TSO.

“League members are thrilled that the 2020 Toledo Symphony League Young Artist Competition was able to take place during this COVID-19 pandemic,” says Kathy Scheer, TSL Past President and YAC Co-Chair. “The TSO was highly creative by making the competition virtual for the applicants and judges. This year is especially important because we are offering the Claudia Trombla Memorial Scholarship money as a portion of each winner’s award. Claudia Trombla was a very dedicated chairperson of the TSL Young Artist Competition for many years. Thank you to the Toledo Symphony, the judges, and the applicants for making this a reality.”

The Toledo Symphony League is dedicated to promoting the Toledo Symphony through fundraising activities. Funds raised by the TSL help provide scholarships, professional development, and educational opportunities to foster the growth of young musicians in Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan.

The one-night-only performance “TSO Chamber Spotlight: Featuring Young Artist Competition Winners” will take place on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 7 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater.
