Yuletide concert reflects joy & solemnity of Christmas

Members of the University Choral Society singing during Joyous Sounds in 2019.

“Joyous Sounds: A Yuletide Celebration” will be presented Monday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green.

The concert is presented as a continuous service with a mix of Christmas music from J.S. Bach to Gene Autry, performed by the University Choral Society, BGSU Graduate Brass Quintet, Collegiate Ringers, percussion, and organist Kevin McGill.

As arranged by Mark Munson, who first presented the annual program in 2017, “Joyous Sounds” offers a soundscape meant to reflect the joy and solemnity of Christmas. The audience is asked to hold its applause until the end of the concert.

The audience is welcomed to join in the singing of several popular carols throughout the evening.

The performance will open with the brass ensemble, coached by David Saltzman,  performing Gene Autry’s “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” and “Good King Wenceslas.”

The choir, conducted by Mark Munson, will begin with Egil Hovland’s “The Glory of the Father” followed by McGill’s performance of Bach’s “In dulci jubilo.”

During “Joyous Sounds,” the audience will be invited to sing “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “O God Beyond All Praising,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” with the  University Choral Society, Graduate Brass Quintet, organ, and percussion.

Also, on the program will be “The Sussex Carol,” and “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow” performed by the University Choral Society, Graduate Brass Quintet, organ, and percussion.

The Choral Society will sing “E’en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come” and “O magnum mysterium” by Francis Poulenc.

The Collegiate Ringers, who made their debut at last year’s “Joyous Sounds,” will perform “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Pat-a-Pan.”

The brass quintet will also perform “Rejoice and Be Merry,” Bach’s “Now Vengeance Has Been Taken,” J.S. Bach, “Gloucestershire Wassail,” and closing with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

The University Choral Society consists of university students, faculty and staff members, and singers from the greater northwest Ohio community.  The choir is scheduled to perform W.A. Mozart’s Requiem with the Toledo Symphony in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m.
