Every farmer “started” farming at some point. Sharing lessons learned along the way can help others leapfrog potential problems. Beginning farmers often have marginal land, limited equipment or resources and hands-on experience at commercial operations.
Lou Driever’s presentation will provide some context based on experience, then share resources designed to help beginning farmers such as the Farmer Veteran Coalition, Farm Bureau, USDA. These can provide not only advice and guidance but grant opportunities as well.
Driever manages a fourth-generation row crop farm (beans/corn/hay), has a fruit and nut orchard (apples/pecans) and a shade crop agroforestry operation (goldenseal/cohosh/etc.). Previously he was a head grower at a hydroponic greenhouse and grow room.
He is actively involved in the Farm Bureau, the Farmer Veteran Coalition, and Rural Action. He has an agriculture degree is from the University of Northwest Ohio.
