Film & panel to explore the groundswell of women in scientific research

The BGSU American Society For Microbiology and the BGSU Department of Biological Sciences  will present “Picture a Scientist,” Wednesday, March 30, in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater, Room 206. The documentary film, “Picture a Scientist,” will be screened 5:30-7:15 p.m. followed by a panel discussion 7:15-8:00 p.m.

“Picture a Scientist” chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries
– including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

The panel members will be:

  • Vipa Phuntumart, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences
  • PegYacobucci, Professor, School of Earth, Environment and Society
  • Stephanie Dalmacio, BGSUTennis Head Coach
  • Emily Barnes-Hanna, Assistant Clinical Professor, Medical Lab Science
  • Ana Brown, Deputy Chief of Diversity, Belonging, and Multicultural Affairs.
