From GATHERING VOLUMES
Independent Bookstore Day marks its fifth year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on Saturday, April 27, with literary parties around the country.
Gathering Volumes, 196 E. South Boundary St., Perrysburg, will be celebrating with doughnuts, special story times, 16 authors, Sesame Street, crepes, special deals and giveaways, and exclusive, day-of merchandise.
“Since its inception in 2014, more than 200 authors and their publishers have demonstrated their support for independent bookstores by donating work for Bookstore Day. We are excited to be offering work by Atlas Obscura, Chelsea Cain, Kelly Barnhill, Chuck Palahniuk, Angie Thomas, and Tui T. Sutherland on April 27 and are also equally excited to help introduce the community to many local authors. Part of our mission as an independent bookstore is to introduce our customers to authors they may not discover elsewhere, including the highly talented local authors in the area.” says Denise Phillips, owner of Gathering Volumes.
“This year Northwest Ohio Authors Sandra Hults and Cassandra Morgan took on the task of organizing the IBD Author Fair and it is going to be fantastic. Along with at least 16 Ohio Authors, they will have a special Children’s area with activities organized by Children’s Author Kelly Jean Lietaert, we will have a special 10 am story time with Ohio author Andrea Kryszak, and many local authors have donated items to create fabulous baskets that will be raffled off to raise money for Austin’s Book Club. Austin’s Book Club provides NICU families with books to read to their newborns.”
The fifth annual National Independent Bookstore Day is sponsored in part by Penguin Random House, Ingram, and The American Booksellers Association. Last year participating bookstores saw an average increase in sales of 200 percent on Independent Bookstore Day, with some stores up as much as 1000% over their average Saturday sales in April. In just five years, Independent Bookstore Day has become a book-buying holiday, increasing book sales on a national level.
The 2019 IBD author ambassador Tayari Jones says, “Indie stores stock books by hand and sell them the same way. They know what we want and need to read because they know us, as people. A writer is not a machine. A reader is not an app. We are human beings and so are the independent bookstore workers who show up each day and place books in our hands.”
