Grounds for Thought to start serving coffee imported directly from Colombian farm

From GROUNDS FOR THOUGHT

Starting Saturday Grounds for Thought customers will get a taste of coffee direct from Colombia.

The company’s first, family-to-family, direct trade coffee with Colombia has arrived.  The shop will begin serving the coffee on Saturday and continue serving it all week.

The shop’s owners, Kelly and Laura Wicks, and members of the Grounds crew have traveled to Colombia to visit Finca El Carmelo and APU Café, owned by Miguel Llanos.

“This is a major step for the company and is a great way to increase our quality and help to improve the lives of farmers in the Teruel-huila region (of Colombia),” stated Kelly Wicks.

Llanos family are second generation farmers. They were driven off their land years ago during Colombia’s civil war. When the war ended they  had to buy the land back after the rebels were gone.

Finca El Carmelo and APU Café is a small family business, similar to Grounds, great people, excellent coffee.

Grounds is the sole US importer for this farm.

Low coffee prices worldwide are causing suffering in many developing, coffee producing countries. Farmers are abandoning their farms, low prices are part of the migration issue facing the US and Mexico.

Direct trade allows us to combat that by paying higher prices and enabling the farmer to earn a living wage and grow their company and community.
