Celebrating creative works of readers and writers alike, Bowling Green State University will hold the 23rd Winter Wheat Writing Festival from Nov. 9-11 at the Education Building on the Bowling Green campus.
Presented by “Mid-American Review,” the University’s international literary journal, the free, three-day public event will feature generative writing workshops, readings, open mic sessions and additional opportunities for writers to connect. Registration is available online.
Attendees can participate in more than 45 in-person and online workshops led by seasoned writers and literary experts with topics in fiction, poetry, nonfiction and other disciplines relevant to writers of all levels.
This year’s festival will also feature a keynote by Faylita Hicks, a distinguished author known for their critically-acclaimed poetry collection “HoodWitch,” as well as BGSU faculty member Dr. Sharona Muir, author of the story collection “Animal Truth” and the novel “Invisible Beasts.”
Hicks will deliver the keynote reading Saturday, 1:15 p.m., 115 Education Building.
Muir will open the festival with a reading Thursday, 7:30 p.m., Prout Chapel.

Also, the festival will host an open mic and concert, Friday, 6:30-11 p.m. at Howard’s Club H. The event will offer Winter Wheat participants and local artists a chance to come together for an inclusive, eclectic night of music, poetry, and performance.
Hosted by Pella Felton and Bea Fields (THEYDAR) the show will feature:
- 6:30 – Featured Reading: Jonie McIntire, Kerry Trautman, Jim Ferris
- 7:30 – Open Mic
- 9 – Music: Zack Fletcher + The Toro Quartet, By the Willow, Chloe and the Strings
Created in 2001, the BGSU Winter Wheat Writing Festival began as one of the few festivals and conferences of its kind in the country. Today, the festival draws more than 300 participants each year and serves as an important reunion for BGSU Department of English alumni and writers from the Midwest and beyond.
