Pet painting party supports BG dog park committee’s efforts

The Citizens for BG Dog Parks Committee will hold a Pet Painting Party on Nov. 19 at Art-a-Site. Participants from an earlier party show off their paintings. (Photo provided)

Animal lovers are invited to enjoy an afternoon connecting with like-minded people during a pet painting party and fundraiser to support the efforts of the Citizens for BG Dog Parks Committee.

The event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 1-4 p.m. at Art-a-Site Studio, 244 S. Main Street.

No artistic skills are required thanks to the talent of Art-a-Site Studio owner Becky Laabs, who will sketch pets’ portraits on canvas from a photo submitted with registration. Laabs, who taught art in public schools for more than 35 years, will provide paints, brushes and patient instruction on the day of the event, allowing participants to go home with a finished 11” by 14” painting of a favorite cat or dog.

Registrations are due by Monday, Oct. 23.  The registration form, instructions on submitting a pet’s photo and payment of the $50 fee to participate can be found at bgdogparks.org.

Beverages and snacks will be provided by the Citizens for BG Dog Parks Committee. Raffle tickets for cat and dog-themed baskets of useful and fun items will be sold with the winner drawn at the end of the event.

The Citizens for BG Dog Parks is working with the City of Bowling Green to establish a dog park within easy walking distance of the city’s residential areas. According to a 2018 article in the National Parks and Recreation Association Magazine, “Off-leash dog parks are one of the fastest growing type of parks in cities across the nation…With ever-growing dog ownership by American households, park agencies across the country are seeing enthusiastic demand for more off-leash dog areas within public parks.”

The Citizens for BG Dog Parks Committee is seeking additional members. For more information, join the Facebook group or visit the group’s website and request to be added to the mailing list.
