Wood County under ‘extreme heat warning’ through July 3

From WOOD COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

Wood County has been placed under an Extreme Heat Warning through Friday, July 3. During this time, heat indices will range between 100°-107°F with little relief over night.

Daily high temperatures are forecasted to rise into the 90s today, June 30, with the warmest days potentially on Wednesday, July 1, and Thursday, July 2.

Heat index values are likely to reach or exceed 100°F or higher for multiple days, posing a risk to vulnerable populations. Heat can be very taxing on the body and can lead to heat related illnesses or make existing health conditions worse.

Heat index

The heat index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. To find the heat index temperature, use this heat index calculator.

Since heat index values were devised for shady, light wind conditions, exposure to full sunshine can increase heat index values by up to 15°F. Also, strong winds, particularly with very hot, dry air, can be extremely hazardous.

During this time, Wood County EMA encourages people to check on their family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers to make sure they are not showing any signs or symptoms of heat illnesses and call 9-1-1 if needed.

Wood County EMA will continue to provide updates as deemed appropriate. When making plans to celebrate this historic July 4th holiday, people are encouraged to take into consideration the forecasted high temperatures and plan accordingly.
