BGSU Arts Events through March 20

Zachery Snow's sculpture "The Masks We Wear" is on exhibit in the Undergraduate Art and Design Exhibition in the Fine Arts Center through March 5. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.

Feb. 26 – The College of Musical Arts voice faculty will perform a showcase concert for the weekly Faculty Artist Series. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at the Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

Feb. 27 – Derek Fenstermacher will present a guest recital at 3:30 p.m.  at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Fenstermacher, a dynamic musician with a keen eye for detail, is part of a new era of tuba soloists of the 21st century. He is the principal tubist with the New Jersey Symphony. The class will begin at 5 p.m. in the Choral Rehearsal Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. The performance is free.

Feb. 27 – Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing students will read their works for the Spring 2020 Reading Series. Alison Mejias Santoro will read poetry and Brenna Hosman will read fiction. The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Prout Chapel. Free

Feb. 27-29 – The Department of Theatre and Film’s “Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties,” by Jen Silverman, continues its run this weekend. The play shares the story of five women, each named Betty, who collide at the intersection of anger, sex and the “Thea-Tah.” Adult theme. Performances are at 8 p.m. Feb. 2 27-29, and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 29. Advance tickets are $5 for students, $10 for seniors and $15 for other adults. On the day of the performance, tickets are $10 for students

Feb. 28 – The BGSU Wind Symphony will perform with special guests, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Wind Ensemble. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at bgsu.edu/arts. BGSU students with ID are admitted free at the door. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Kobacker Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center.

March 2 – The percussion group Ensemble Duniya will present a guest artist recital. Ensemble Duniya is a musical collaboration between percussionists Neeraj Mehta, Anthony Di Sanza, Jonathan Ovalle, Shawn Mativetsky and Dan Piccolo. The recital will begin at 8 p.m. at Kobacker Hall, Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 3 – The BGSU College of Musical Arts student jazz ensembles will present a concert in downtown Bowling Green. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Howard’s Club H, 210 N. Main Street. Free

March 3 – The Department of Theatre and Film will present “If Beale Street Could Talk” for this week’s Tuesday Night Screening. Based on the novel by James Baldwin, Tish (KiKi Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James), a young couple filled with optimism over Tish’s pregnancy, have their lives thrust into chaos when Fonny is arrested for rape. Tish and Fonny’s struggle is further intensified by the discontent amongst the extended family members over Tish’s pregnancy. Only Tish’s mother Sharon (Regina King), filled with fortitude and perseverance, can shepherd them through the troubling times. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. in the BGSU Film Theater, 206 Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Free

March 3 – The Graduate Brass Quintet will present a recital. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 4 – Dr. Matthew Daline-McBride, associate professor of strings, will present a viola concert for the weekly Faculty Artist Series. He has performed worldwide as a chamber musician and viola soloist. He performs at music festivals such as The Banff Center, the Montecito Music Festival, Spoleto Festival, The Washington International Music Festival, and has held viola master classes and lectures at universities around the world. The recital will begin at 8 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 5-6 – The Department of Theatre and Film will present “Letter Purloined” as part of the Elsewhere Productions season. The play by David Isaacson is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” and has a unique feature where the performance will be in a different order each night. Justin Hopper is the director. The play will begin at 8 p.m. each night in the Eva Marie Saint Theatre at The Wolfe Center for the Arts. Free

March 8 – Mei-Hsuan Huang, an associate professor of piano at Iowa State University, and Borivoj Martinic-Jercic, internationally renowned violinist, each will present a master class. Huang’s piano master class will begin at 10 a.m. and Martinic-Jercic’s violin master class will begin at 1 p.m. Both classes will be held at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 8 – Praecepta, the student chapter of the Society of Composers Inc., presents 24/24, an event in which performers and composers are paired together randomly for the weekend to collaborate over a 48-hour period. For the first 24 hours, the composer writes the piece for their paired performer. For the second 24 hours, the performer learns the piece and the concert is held at the end of the 48 hours. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 8 – The BGSU University Band, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Moss, will present a concert. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at Kobacker Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 8 – Guest artists Borivoj Martinic-Jercic, violin, and Mei-Hsuan Huang, piano, will perform together in a recital. Violinist Martinic-Jercic’s illustrious career has included earning the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin Award and performing with ensembles such as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Detroit Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. Pianist Huang has earned several international piano competitions including the USASU International Piano Competition (Tempe, Ariz.), the 57th Wideman Piano Concert Competition and the International Chopin Piano Competition in Taipei, Taiwan. She regularly performs more than 50 solo and chamber recital each year in Europe, Canada, Taiwan and the U.S. The recital will begin at 8 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. March 9 – The BGSU Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Moss, will present a concert. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. at Kobacker Hall, Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 10 – The Tuesday Night Screenings, hosted by the BGSU Department of Theatre and Film, will feature the 1992 film “Gas Food Lodging.” The inventive indie film by Director Allison Anders explores the lives of the women at roadside diners who provide temporary comfort and distraction. Highlighting the film’s engaging characters and performances, critics have applauded the film’s ingenious multi-thread narrative and its bold but humorous look at sex, family dynamics, racial prejudice and the experience of crossing boundaries. The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the BGSU Film Theater, Room 206 Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Free

March 10 – The College of Musical Arts’ chamber jazz ensembles will present a concert to kick off jazz week activities in the college. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 11 – Composer Octavio Vazquez, saxophonist Chisato Marling and pianist Sarah Rhee will present a master class. The class will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Choral Rehearsal Hall, 1004 Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 12 – The Creative Writing Program welcomes visiting writer Tracy Zeman for the Spring Reading Series. Zeman’s poems have appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal, Chicago Review, jubilat, TYPO and other journals. She has received a number or residencies, most notably six weeks at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, Oregon. Zeman is a freelance writer and editor for a number of conservation organizations in the Midwest. She lives outside Detroit with her husband and daughter. Her first full-length collection, “Empire,” examines the European settlement and ecological devastation of the North American prairie. The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Prout Chapel. Free

March 12 – The Jazz Lab Band I will present a concert to conclude the Jazz Week events. The concert will feature special guest artist Frank Kimbrough on piano. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Kobacker Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Tickets to the performance are $8 and can be purchased at bgsu.edu/arts. BGSU students with ID are admitted free.

March 13 – Ross Holcombe, assistant principal trombone of the Florida Orchestra, will present a master class to BGSU trombone students. The class will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Room 1004 Moore Musical Arts Center. Free

March 13 – The College of Musical Arts welcomes guest artist Eri Nakagawa. She is a native of Osaka, Japan, and a member of the piano faculty of College of Music at Mahidol University in Thailand since 1995. She regularly presents solo recitals and has performed more than 10 concertos with numerous orchestras including the Ball State Symphony Orchestra, where she completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in piano performance. The recital will begin at 8 p.m. at Bryan Recital Hall at Moore Musical Arts Center. Free
